S01.2010

I still remember recording Slow Burning Lights and Reverse Tattoos around a few people in the studio and them looking up at me like... did he just say that? I was saying some of the most vulnerable stuff on wax at the time. I conceptualized this story in 2010. It was the month of October and Kanye West was going through his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy run.

During this time I was writing three to five songs a day. I'd write one or two songs that required songwriting and then I would write another two that were on some two verses, 64 bars a piece type of raps we've been accustomed to hearing from Joe Budden. I would literally eat up any beat I could find. I was sharpening the sword.

I wrote majority of Bad Luck Good Nights in two weeks and a half. It was right after Kanye had dropped MBDTF. I was overweight, first time in my life, and I was mentally in another world. I was beyond an introvert. I was writing at least 300 bars a week, only taking weekends off. Not shaving, not caring about how others perceived me. The worst was, I didn't even care how I was perceiving myself outside of paper and ink.

At the heart of it all the title reflects how some of our most memorable moments in life come after a day or week where we've felt life has kicked us around and dealt us the wrong cards. It's in these moments where our luck starts to change and we have good (or at least memorable) nights. - XXXX

Needless to say, I got my soul together, when I wanted to change in my heart. Thanks to the music surrounding me at the time I had companionship. I was getting out of a three year relationship and doing my best to get out of that weird on again off again stage of the relationship. The music I was revisiting was heavily influencing the cadence of pain I would later spill in my recordings. I listened to these albums religiously before I was able to dissect my draft laptop recordings with some freestyles and get to a decent mic set up. Hardest part was re-recording these songs and the pain after I was coming out of it. It wasn't the break up, it was the culmination of many situations outside of a relationship, and getting out of it to only focus on myself and my growth was the crescendo of it all.
